Stefanos Stagkourakis
Stefanos completed his undergraduate degree in Molecular Biology at the University of Crete (Greece), the last semester of which he went to Uppsala University (Sweden), where he studied Neuroscience. He then pursued an MSc degree in Pharmacology at Oxford University, and a PhD at Karolinska Institute in Stockholm. His research aims to build towards an understanding of instinctive and learned behaviors, using tools from the disciplines of molecular biology, pharmacology, neurophysiology, behavior, and computational biology. More recently, he has been working on using custom designed silicon probes for extracellular electrophysiology, to gain simultaneous, single-unit access across multiple deep brain regions in freely behaving animals engaging in diverse behaviors. The latter projects aim to assess the degree at which the encoding of behavior is nucleus restricted or distributed, behavior-specific or of mixed selectivity
