Udi Binshtok
Udi attained his BSc degree in Physics and MSc degree in Theoretical and Mathematical Biology, from Tel Aviv University. He earned his PhD from the School of Neurobiology, Biochemistry & Biophysics at Tel Aviv University, for his study on Notch mediated patterning during development and homeostasis, under the supervision of Prof. David Sprinzak. After earning his PhD, Udi continued his work with Prof. Sprinzak as a visiting research assistant in the laboratory of Prof. Laure Bally-Cuif at Institut Pasteur in Paris. Concurrently, Udi was collaborating on different projects with Prof. Dr. Thomas Klein at Heinrich-Heine-University in Dusseldorf, Prof. Hernan Garcia at UC Berkley, and Prof. Brian Gebelein at Cincinnati Children's Hospital. His work was supported by a fellowship from the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities and the Chateaubriand Training Research Fellowship from the French government.
In the Anderson's lab, Udi is developing theoretical and mathematical models to explain how neural circuits control motor action selection during aggressive behaviors in Drosophila melanogaster. His theoretical work is grounded in experimental data collected by colleagues in the lab, and his network models incorporate connectivity from the fly connectome. Udi is the recipient of the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO) Postdoctoral Fellowship Award, and he is a Rothschild Fellow.
In his spare moments between research schedules, Udi plays guitar (he was a former band player) and is an animal rights activist; he enjoys hiking and cycling in the outdoors, bouldering, skiing, surfing, and sporadically dancing Argentine tango.
